Account of expenditure
Account of the expenditure of the Weebale Foundation, first six months 2011
The Weebale Foundation has been active in the village of Banda Kyandaaza during the first six months of 2011.Two board members, Krista Zumpolle and Robert Bloemendal, lived and worked in this village for quite a long period to realize the aims of the foundation. In the mean time two projects have been realized in Banda Kyandaaza: the water pump near the nursery school and the sanitation project near the hospital.(linkje naar foto’s) At the moment Weebale is working on the following projects:
1. Water supply for the entire village of Banda Kyandaaza
The project involves the supply of water – actually a water system – to make it easier for the people to tap water. At this moment the women and children have to walk more than a thousand meters to a valley to fill the 20-liter jerry cans, the children carry a bit less, and walk back to their cottages with this heavy load. Apart from heavy it is also dangerous on account of possible assaults and kidnappings. The project involves the pumping of water from a source into a water tank. From this tank the water is led to a number of taps in the village. Since the terrain is hilly, the tank is being built in an elevated spot in the village. So far the activities of the Weebale Foundation are especially aimed at creating public support in the village. It is essential that such a large-scale project is initiated and supported by the local community. This took much time and energy. Meanwhile there is a plan in which the community describes why such a water supply is important for the village, how the project can be managed and how the system will be run by the community. On the basis of this plan the Weebale Foundation will coordinate future steps. This involves among other things that with the help of a hydraulic engineering bureau a technical plan and a detailed budget will be made. Subsequently the Weebale Foundation will round the funding of the project. After that the project will be launched.
2. Women empowerment project
In this project women who want to start a business are supported and put on their way with a start funding by the Weebale Foundation. This project is being arranged at the request of a group of women. The community is developing a plan with an organizational set-up to start and finance concrete subprojects in a sound and sustainable way. The women can set up or extend small, independent businesses in the field of agriculture or stock breeding, or a shop, with this money, which has to be paid back with interest.
Account of expenditure Weebale Foundation
The activities of our board members in Uganda cost money. Krista and Robert pay for this partly out of their own resources. Thus they paid for the plane tickets and the rent of a house and office in the village themselves. The direct cost of the Weebale projects are reimbursed by the Weebale Foundation. During the first six months of 2011 the Weebale Foundation paid a sum of 1,750 euro in all. This amount of money was spent on transport, support of local people and other necessities. By using the means efficiently and by the private contribution of Krista and Robert the costs remained relatively limited and within the planned budget. In spite of the fact that the above-mentioned projects have not been realized yet, a lot of preliminary work has been done and promising intermediate results have been achieved. The Weebale Foundation expects that the final phase of the water supply can be launched in the second six months of 2011. For the women empowerment project concrete results are also expected within the foreseeable future.
